How to Help Windows Server 2012 Resolve DNS for Shared PC Hostnames in a Domain<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are experiencing issues accessing shared computers on your domain, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Check Network Discovery:<\/strong>\u00a0Ensure that network discovery is turned on for the affected computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Reboot the Computers:<\/strong>\u00a0Restart the computers that are having connectivity issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Access by IP Address:<\/strong>\u00a0If you can access the computers by their IP address but not by hostname, this indicates a DNS issue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Verify DNS Resolution:<\/strong>\u00a0If you cannot access the computers by hostname and Server 2012 is handling DNS for your domain, check if their IP addresses have changed . You can do this by:\n

    • Log into the Server<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Press\u00a0Win + R<\/strong>\u00a0to open the Run dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Type\u00a0dnsmgmt.msc<\/strong>\u00a0and press Enter to open the DNS management console.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Navigate to\u00a0Forward Lookup Zones<\/strong>\u00a0and select your domain (e.g., AVP.local).<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    • On the device handling DHCP, set these hostnames to Static IPs to minimize how often you have to update IP addresses in Server 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Update Hostnames:<\/strong>\u00a0Consider updating the hostnames in the DNS server to ensure they remain consistent and accessible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
